Following v.1 Labs and Frontline, It was time to get my own personalized domain and just go back to Freelancing for awhile. You could say that this (this site) has been one of the longest running "pet project" to date. It's had multiple revisions and will likely still have a few more in the coming years.
Freelancing is a feast or famine choice, you're either high on the hog or a starving artist and it's not for the weak of heart. The up-side is you get pretty good at money management and understanding cashflow becomes a top priority. The down-side is that while you can earn enough to get by and even slowly upgrade yourself, doing freelance is a self-employed endeavour. Its not a business. Freelancers tend to treat it like a business, but if you're not working (exchanging your time for money), you're not earning. A business on the other hand continues to make money even if you're not there.
I've met some pretty awesome people and got to work on some amazing projects thanks to freelancing, so I can't begrudge any of it. Sometimes I would pick up part-time or partial load teaching work to supplement my income because I had the educator skills and experience in my pocket. This direction can (and will) make you a workaholic if you're not careful though.
For a long time, I had the following image plastered on the front page of my website, it's one of my favorite comics about development.
