triOS College
They say who you know can be more important than what you know, ending up at triOS college is an example of this (and the weird ways people show back up in your life). When I was working at CDI years earlier, one of my amazing co-workers was a woman named Raffela. Over the years we worked together, I met her family (including her husband, Steve). Steve and I always got along great and would geek out in conversations about development, which he was interested in from a hobby perspective, so I wasn't too surprised to hear from him while I was teaching for the International Acedemy of Design and Technology in Toronto.
I had posted on one of my social feeds "I love exam days ... does that make me evil?", Within minutes I got a DM from Steve, "OMG! When do you go back to Teaching?! I need you! Can we connect??" Out of the blue, but I was happy for a catch-up, I found out he was the Director of triOS Toronto campus and agreed to drive downtown and meet him the following day. We chatted a bit in his office and he gave me a tour of the campus and let me know he needed someone to run a unix bootcamp to help a batch of students get up to speed and that he wanted me to come teach in their video game development program in the evennings so he could promote his current prof to faculty head.
I asked him who was getting the promotion and to my very pleasant surprise he told me Kwame. I could only laugh, amazing for Kwame for sure, pretty crazy how many times our lives crossed paths (and this still wouldn't be the last time). Steve wanted to know what was so funny so I filled him in on our history at Rogers, IADT and now triOS. I think Kwame was super relieved and pleased when he found out Steve wanted me to fill his shoes in the evening program, by this time I had gained a fair bit of respect in the private college education circut.
